This is an interesting one, if you disable the balloon driver, won’t the guest VMs’ then be hoarding free memory they don’t need? I guess it’s a case of which situation do you think is least worst?

Simple, the memory optimization (balloon driver) works by allocating kernel mode memory. For a x32 bit Terminal Server, this can be devastating to scalability as there are limits. This is one of the reason you hear of shops only getting 10-20 users per vm.

Let us know what they say. I understand why the shared folders should be not allowed – they broke something. But I’m not sure why the memory optimization (ballon) drivers should not be used. I haven’t seen anything to explain why not just a caution not to use them.

Thank you, Joe and Eric. I am checking with my VMware guys to see if that is the case.

Did you install the VM tools? When you did, did you remove the "Shared Folders"? If not, then do so… Also remove the memory optimization (balloon driver) while you're at it.

I forgot to mention that it seems to be working fine on our other 40 Physical PS servers.

For some reason, the UPHClean program, although running as an active service, is not working on any of our Virtual Servers. We are running Win2k3 SP2, PS 4.0. UPHClean is version 1.6d.
Has anyone else seen an issue with this running on Virtual Servers?
