[THIN] Published Outlook 2007 is ugly

Publishing office 2007 on w2k3 r2 w/sp2, citrix name-of-the-day 4.5, and Outlook is just ugly. As in 16-color ugly. All of the other apps, including office, look fine, and pictures embedded within an e-mail message display fine in Outlook, it's just Outlook itself is hideous.

Ideas?

[THIN] Download Pick: Synctoy 2.0

This weeks download pick is Synctoy. Microsoft has released an updated version of the Synctoy Powertoy for windows which allows you to easily sync files and folders..

Here is a list of the new features of Synctoy 2.0 from the Readme
  • Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.
  • True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.
  • Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.
  • Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).
  • Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.
  • Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.
  • Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.
  • Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.
  • Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.
  • Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.
  • 64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.
  • Folder pair rename
  • Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.
  • Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.
  • Setup Improvements: Integrated setup with single self-extracting archive file and no extra downloads if you already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Enabled silent install for the SyncToy Installer file (see readme.txt file for more information). Removed combine and subscribe actions.
  • Removed combine and subscribe actions
  •

There is also a white paper now that explains Synctoy and how it can be used to enhance your workflow at:

[THIN] Re: MS Outlook in Citrix

You'll need to verify that the users have proper permission to write to their profile and user folders on the server.
You must have the following set: Administrators Full control, The user Full control, and System Full control, on both.

Look for entries in your users folder and profiles folder that have .domain after them. (.domain would be the name of your domain) They shouldn't these folders get created when the directories do not have proper permissions and the user won't get their profile properly because it is obviously different than what you would have specified in the users profile tab in ad.

I can provide directions and a script to you if you have this problem.

Here's a strange one:  Just recently some Outlook configuration settings are not being saved in our users' Citrix roaming profiles; specifically, additional mailboxes and signature selections.  For instance, if I add an additional mailbox to my outlook profile in Citrix it is gone the next time I run Outlook in Citrix.  Also, I have successfully created a signature but I have to keep choosing it from the drop down list every time I use Outlook.  It never remembers the last time I chose it.

Both of these functions worked before.  I don't know what has changed since they stopped working.  All these settings work fine on our desktops, just not in Citrix.

    [THIN] Re: Odd question

a long time ago I was handling DOS applications with WinFrame this way.

We had a shortcut that was the published application, that would
launch a batch script on the WinFrame server, that would set a number
of environment variables, that then launched the application.

the environment variables we set according to the computername of the client.

Each users applicaton instance would then hold a unique set of
variables which the application would think were computer level
variables, not user variables (which it didn't know how to deal with).

So that is the answer to your question.

However, Rick's solution is far more elegant.

What is driving the use of non-UPD printer drivers?  Is it WAN printing?

    [THIN] Re: MF4.5 and PCL5 or PCL6

    Hi,

It depends on where you're printing.

If it's across the WAN then PCL 6 drivers generally produce a smaller print job but historically because the PCL 6 drivers were newer code, they were also more unstable. These days since HP has cleaned up their act I'd be happy to use PCL 6 drivers for their greater efficiency.

Of course I think it's inexcusable that Citrix customers still have to consider using non-UPD printer drivers. They should have had the UPD Gateway by now and all the crap we've had with printer drivers ought to be history.

I guess you'll have to wait for XenApp 5, for the XPS gateway.

    regards,

    [THIN] Re: Odd question

    Hi Bill,

You can't script it but you could be lucky.

If the application is looking up the computername, then if the username is acceptable in lieu of a computername, it's as easy as setting an application compatibility flag for the application.

I'll give you an example of what to do.

Let's say your application executable is called testapp.exe

    Create a key under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications called "TestApp".

Under that key create a Dword value called "Flags"  and assign a value of 0x10 Hex

The next time the application starts up when it looks up computername, it will get the logged on username for that session.

    regards,

    Rick

    Okay, thanks.
I don't know why Adobe can't get it right.   We had to wait for years before they had a version that works well in a TS environment and now they broke it again.

Hmm it looks like from reading the Acrobat 8 software EULA you MIGHT be able to do it.
    Specifically:
"Updates. If the Software is an upgrade or update to a previous version of Adobe software, you must possess a valid license to such previous version in order to use such upgrade or update. After you install such update or upgrade, you may continue to use any such previous version in accordance with its end-user license agreement only if (a) the upgrade or update and all previous versions are installed on the same device, (b) the previous versions or copies thereof are not transferred to another party or device unless all copies of the update or upgrade are also transferred to such party or device and (c) you acknowledge that any obligation Adobe may have to support the previous version(s) may be ended upon the availability of the upgrade or update. No other use of the previous version(s) is permitted after installation of an update or upgrade. Upgrades and updates may be licensed to you by Adobe with additional or different terms."

So if I am reading this right you can keep 8 on the computer IF you bought the upgrade version.  But I see nothing anywhere about downgrade options like MS eula's so you might have to talk to Adobe on that one.

Just curious, are you using the Full Acrobat product or just Reader?  If full, how do you manage licensing if only a small number of users are licensed to use it?  I ask because the Acrobat install puts add-ins for MS Office and other apps.  We secured the exe for Acrobat so only the licensed users could run it but it caused errors for everyone else.

The bigger problem was that it over wrote Acrobat Reader as the default app for opening pdf's.  So now everyone who wasn't allowed to run the Acrobat.exe file and tried to open a pdf got an error.  Big Mess!

Just wondering if you had to deal with any of these issues and how you were able to get around them.

Does anyone know if Acrobat 9.0 professional works well on a Citrix server?

I have version 8.0 and it's working fine, but I know this is the first version to work well since acrobat 4.0

Jim:  It looks like I will need to buy more licenses.  Do you know if I can buy 9.0 and use 8.0?

Stick with 8.  We have had to many problems with trying to get 9 to work in many different situations.  I posted a link to a script to install 9 last week which is in my blog posting about it here http://kenzig.blogspot.com/2008/08/watch-out-with-adobe-acrobat-reader-9.html but there is also links from Citrix admin who had issues.

    Hector,

Just curious, are you using the Full Acrobat product or just Reader?  If full, how do you manage licensing if only a small number of users are licensed to use it?  I ask because the Acrobat install puts add-ins for MS Office and other apps.  We secured the exe for Acrobat so only the licensed users could run it but it caused errors for everyone else.

The bigger problem was that it over wrote Acrobat Reader as the default app for opening pdf’s.  So now everyone who wasn’t allowed to run the Acrobat.exe file and tried to open a pdf got an error.  Big Mess!

Just wondering if you had to deal with any of these issues and how you were able to get around them.

    Thanks,

    Jim

[THIN] Re: Argh 4 clicks to get to the Citrix client from Citrix.com

Well if they were installing it on internal PC's that would be fine but this is for my external WI for home users and I really don't care what version they use, I just want them to be able to find and use it and no I am not going to increase my bw and usage and provide downloads of the client from my server.

I really don't think it is asking too much for a link from the home page of Citrix.com that reads Client Downloads that doesn't have the confusion of a login box to make you think that you have to login to get it in fhe first place, which you don't.

Instead you have to go to a dropdown that reads support (wrong, I want software), choose downloads (and when I get tehre what the hell do you mean I have to login for the client), select search downloads by product drop down or hope that the "featured download" on the right fits your product, Then figure out what Citrix is calling Xenapp this week, until finally you get a choice to a page where you can choose a client, from there you can figure it out but OH look beta 11 as first choice, maybe I should try that one? What the heck guys,,, beta versions should probably be down the list a bit. It is at least a 15 minute excercise just to be able to find (and not including download time) the ICA client which IS their core business. You aren't going to be able to put a positive spin on this no matter how hard you try Steve. The layout is insane.

Think of this as a good thing, this way your users can't download a version that breaks everything! I would highly recommend you put a static link on your web interface and after you have tested a new client put it on your website. You can use the same file name so you don't have to change the HTML....

That would be great if they didn't change the url every week.  I want it to place at the bottom of my WI page so users can get the latest client. Citrix keeps making it harder and harder to find, barring the fact that they rename it every 6 months.
I can't even just point to the downloads page anymore because it keeps changing.

    Perhaps you could put:

    into TinyURL or somesuch?

Thats what i have done, I just grabbed a copy of the client, renamed it and dropped in on our own web server.

and speaking of modems (totally OT) I used to work at the Hayes Micro plant in alpharetta GA.  Was working on cleaning out the plant one day and found an Internal Modem with Hand-drawn traces.  WIsh I had been able to keep it.
