[THIN] New Free App - TSTaskman

Dear All

Happy holidays.

Another handy little utility from the house of Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy. As always download it for
free from http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/CAD_TSUtils.htm

TSTaskman is a standalone Windows GUI tool designed to show a user the list of processes running
in their Terminal Server session only. Processes can then be terminated by the user by selecting
the process and pressing the terminate button.

This utility was written for the purpose of allowing users to terminate frozen programs or processes
that exist only in the Terminal Server Session of the currently logged in user. The GUI lists all the
running processes in the Terminal Session of the logged on user, and does not display any other
user or system processes. This allows TSTaskman to be presented as an application on the user
desktop or as a published application, giving the user the ability to manage frozen applications
within a Terminal Server session, should they occur. After correct user training of TSTaskman, help
desk calls can be significantly reduced by allowing users to terminate unresponsive applications,
without the concerns that the user can terminate other processes not running in their session.

Although written for Terminal Server and Citrix environments, this application will function on non-
TS/Citrix workstations and servers. This application has been tested on the following platforms:

Windows 2003 Server SP1
Windows 2003 Server SP1 w/ Citrix PS 4.0
Windows 2003 Server SP1 (Terminal Server Application Mode)
Windows 2000 Server SP4
Windows 2000 Server SP4 w/ Citrix MF XP
Windows 2000 Server SP4 (Terminal Server Application Mode)
Windows 2000 Server SP4 w/ Citrix MF 1.8
Windows XP Professional (domain member)

This utility is FREEWARE and was written by Warren Simondson of
Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy, Australia. www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au

The freeware version is offered AS IS. Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy has made every effort possible
to ensure that TSTaskman is free of any bugs or errors, however in no way is TSTaskman to be
considered error or bug free. You assume all responsibility for any damages or lost data that may
result from any errors or bugs in TSTaskman.

IN NO EVENT WILL CTRL-ALT-DEL IT CONSULTANCY BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY
GENERAL,SPECIAL, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL,
INCIDENTAL OR OTHER DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THIS PRODUCT.

[THIN] Re: After PSE400W2K3R06 : MPSError type="IMA"0x80000032

I too had problems with Web Interface not seeing the published app after my
4.5 upgrade which included PSE450W2K3R03. Citrix Support had me download
MedEvac which I used to locate a 'damaged' application which was causing the
XML service to send unintelligible information to the Web Interface. Once I
deleted that published application all was well. I was in a mixed 4.0 / 4.5
farm at the time which supposedly contributed to this problem. It is
available here http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX107935

Here is what MedEvac does in its own words:

MedEvac Tool Version 2.5

Created Date: September 20, 2006

Updated Date: September 23, 2008

Description
-----------
The MedEvac tool is utilized to run checks against a Presentation Server
farm to verify environment health.

This tool can be used to check the following components of a Presentation
Server Farm:

1. Verify XML Service Health:

a. Verifies that the XML service is able to respond to an XML, Web
Interface, Program Neighborhood Agent or Program Neighborhood Client
request.

b. Verifies that the XML brokers are able to contact the Data
Collector.

2. Verify Data Collector Health:

a. Verifies Data Collector is able to provide a least loaded server
for the specified application.

b. Verifies IMA Service on the Data Collector is functioning
properly.

c. Verifies the IMA Service can read the Data Collector's LHC.

d. Verifies that the IMA Service can read its Dynamic Store data.

e. Verifies at least one server in the farm has this application
published.

3. Verify least loaded server health:

a. Verifies Term Service on least loaded server.

b. Verifies RPC Service on least loaded server.

Is your IMA service restarting ok by itself on your data collector and did
you happen to install any packages with IMS before you had this problem? It
almost sounds like the same problem you have when applying R03 for PS 4.5 if
you have corrupted or duplicate jobs only the IMA service would be hung
after.

What do you get if you run dscheck /full servers

No we did not add more groups to all ID's, I use a baseline account and that
did not change but also dos not see all published app's it is granted to.

Thanks, indeed did a check on all that (no sharing with IIS and config is
still correct), nothing has changed only the fact w've rolled out
PSE400W2K3R06 on the Citrix servers.

[THIN] Re: After PSE400W2K3R06 : MPSError type="IMA"0x80000032

Forgot the obvious, can you telnet to your XML port on your data collector, assuming you are using port 80. Is it sharing with IIS? Have you looked at your Web Interface and made sure your config still set to pointing to the correct XML servers?

As far as the first part of the problem, do you get the same problem if you use explicit instead of Autologon?

For the second part of the problem, what do you get back when you run dscheck? Did you recently add more groups to your ID's. I had a similar problem and we had to do an xml fix to the data collectors in order to process accounts that had more then a certain amount of AD groups...that was with PS 3.0 though.

Hi,

Tested last week PSE400W2K3R06 on a test server and everything went ok so
rolled out yesterday PSE400W2K3R06 in production (Windows 2003 SP2 , PS 4.0
farm), but now a lot of people only see a few of all published applications
they are granted for (via Program Neighborhood client). WebInterface 4.5
even does not show any application. Looking at the WI servers I found
following error messages:

"The XML document sent by the Citrix servers could not be processed because
it contains invalid XML. This message was reported from the XML Service at
address "http://<server ip>:80/scripts/wpnbr.dll
http://com.citrix.xml.NFuseProtocol.RequestAppData". This XML Service could
not be contacted and will be temporarily removed from the list of active

And detail from networksnif on WI server:

Any ideas what is the culprit?

Just be sure to put the server in change user /install mode prior to installing it and run it and it works fine. There is also a SP1 update to the compatibility pack so you may need to run updates to get it.

The only issue we have seen with 11.x is improper cleanup of the ICA 3.0 section in the Module.ini file….The upgrade left the header and all the virtuals even though most have moved to the registry…Make the session GPF on launch and close….Popped up a weird message about encryption not being supported…Removed the invalid entries and all is well

In the past week I have had a dramatic upswing in the number of issues with clients whose PC lock up or otherwise seem to having issues with the client software. Most are running version 10.0 through 10.2. I removed and re-installed version 11 and it does not seem to help.
They are running Windows XP for the most part SP3.

I have one client that when our program pops up a dialog box, his PC immediately shuts off.
Another, her session locks up anytime any printer related functions are attempted.
And another if the program opens any dialog box the whole session freezes.

Has anyone seen this or similar issues lately?
Its unusual to have this happen this much even if it is only 3 or 4 clients out of over 1000. The problem is that I cannot find anything on the client PC currently.
They are connecting to Presentation server 4 and 4.5 with W2k3 and w2k3x64 respectively.

"Why" is a good question Joe :) I see nearly 40% pagefile usage when
I have over 2GB of RAM free on a 32 bit Windows 2003 server with 4GB
of RAM. Adding more RAM in my situation wouldn't help much.
Haven't tested simply putting the 2 disks in a RAID0 to see if it's
any better or worse performance wise (I might just do that though).I
do see a healthy boost going from RAID1 to no RAID/split paging disk
config though.

[THIN] Re: Citrix - Harddisk Specification

Thanks to all of you who responded to my query.

We have purchased Windows Server 2003 Enterprise licenses. Servers will have 4 x 72gb disks and 16gb RAM.

Due to the nature of this particular Citrix installation, there will be only 3 servers for the time being. With this in mind, we have decided to go for Raid 1 for the OS and the paging file.

Toby

2008/12/19 Joe Shonk <joe.shonk@gmail.com>
The question is, is the pagefile being used that much? If so, then why?
Overall, it still isn't going to make a difference. With RAID 0 or 1 you
are going to be accessing two spindle on every read. Not so if they are
operating independently. You are limiting yourself to 1 read for the
pagefile and 1 read for the OS at any given time. And again, how many page
fault are you encountering? If it's that big of an issue, then it's time to
add more RAM.

Joe

I would disagree. If your disk arms (both of them are predominantly
hitting the page file) you have created latency for other non-paging
disk activities. System may page faster but apps and other binaries
are waiting for disk time due to waiting on near constant paging
activity. It' probably hair splitting at this point dedicated spindle
for paging vs. just RAID0 but this config works well for me.

Correct. I am actually talking (4) 32 bit TS/XE servers on 1 physical
blade (using a bare metal hypervisor like Hyper-V) as it will be able
to actually use all of that horsepower. x64 breaks some of our apps,
so for now it's out of the picture. If you have the resources why not
use it?

[THIN] Re: Citrix - Harddisk Specification - Email found in subject

There are some performance technologies around now which can "Prioritise" or "Schedule" the User\Process access to the disk subsystem of a Windows Server (virtual guest or physical). This can achieve real benefits for SAN type deployments, or simply, to overcome the kind of bottle neck and latency issues Matt mentions below.

So, given the scenario below, I could setup a group of apps\process\users who I knew didn't have heavy disk paging activity and bump their priority to the disk. If this app\process\user comes into competition with another process that needs disk system access, my filter driver pauses it for a second so my app experiences a greatly reduced disk latency time (if at all, if not enhanced access times in any given moment)

While you're at it this kind of performance software technology will reduce the amount of paging by optimising .DLL resources and free up physical memory. Net result? Greater user densities (typically 40%) or Less Physical Servers (less tin, power, CO2 and all that), or less $$$ spent trying to add sufficient bandwidth to a SAN. Pays for itself in the end.
