[THIN] Re: x64 madness

You need to istall the 32 bit runtime as well in my experience as the
resource manager is still 32bit.

[THIN] Re: Failover for Citrix Web Interface?

Agreed- if VM’s are in the picture a few other options exist like Jim said to make copies or use (carefully) HA features in the hypervisor

Our WI/License server is a VM.  We make a copy of it.  If one fails we turn the other one on.  You could probably somehow script the vm power on.

I would suggest you add another instance of Web Interface and license server to one of the other boxes. With a small environment you don’t really need much more.

If failover has to be automatic probably go with MS NLB or some form of MS clustering.

Subject: [THIN] Failover for Citrix Web Interface?

Hello,

This is probably a stupid question but I just got assigned to support the Citrix farm in our environment so apologies in advance.

We’re on Xenapp 5 with Presentation Server 4.5 – which I believe are the latest stable releases.  We have Enterprise edition.

We don’t have a load balancer.  Right now I have 4 servers.  I have 1 running as the license server and primary web interface.  2 are hosting applications using the built-in load balancing/failover in Citrix.  I have the last box hosting special applications that I would like to keep separate.

Is there a way to do some fail-over with the web interface without a load balancer?  Looks like Citrix got rid of having the centralized web configuration recently.

Also any general suggestions/pointers on how to achieve load balancing and failover without use of separate load balancer would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards,

Peter

If archiving is your main priority, Symantec EV is the way to go IMHO. We've seen it being used at several places and when I last looked at one of the Gartner articles, the SEV was out on its own in the archiving area. Get ready to put a case together for it though as it isn't the cheapest product out there J.

Hope this helps.

Archiving is the main goal. I realise Sharepoint was not a good comparison, but my knowledge on the matter is very limited and I don't know of any other comparable products to Vault.

Thanks to Greg & Bill for suggestions - looked at the demo's, nothing more atm.

Jaime,

I don't think you can compare those products. Or even try to compare  DMS and archiving in general. MOSS is a collaboration platform that, among other things, has some DMS functionality. It is part of the Office product line and plays very together nice with Word et al. Enterprise Vault is a pure archiving solution that can, among things, archive SharePoint-based content into it's own database.

What are you trying to achieve, why did you come up with these two products?

Dan

Greetings List,

Sorry for the OT - just wondering what people would recommend for an Archive/Document Management solution?

I'm aware of and have had a look at:-

Symantec Vault http://www.symantec.com/business/enterprise-vault - which has the added benefit of catering for your PST files/emails as well as flat files

Sharepoint  http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/default.mspx - which according to every course I've ever been on the instructors have advised its a nice product but certainly not the best document manager!

What is the lists' opinion?

We've had great success with Cor2 (www.cor2.com), a web based solution with features like automatic OCR, workflow, etc.  Not too expensive either.  We've worked with Scott Lombard over there and a number of our customers have chosen it over many others.  SaaS is a great way to deliver this.

Can you use the USERNAME environment variable, as in 'echo %USERNAME%' ?

This will return the pre-Windows 2000 logon name (sAMAccountName)
value, which may be anglea.smith or asmith or smtiha or angelasm7
or....

... it all depends on how you do user admin in your domain.

I've seen some problems caused by the RSS/TOE functionality installed
and enabled with SP2.

Update your NIC drivers and firmware when you do the SP2 update,
especially if they're using a broadcom chipset.

Also, take a read of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945977

Did you try just opening up the default users ntuser.dat in regedit on the server and prepopulating the key? (also look under HKLM/current/ms/ windows nt/terminal server/ installed/ office/common etc key for the same settings and populate it) The change user /install trick works for this also.

Hi

Im having lots of issues finding a VB script that will update this office key.  Does anyone have a VB script that will update this.  Id like to have the script interrogate AD so the real user name is used but anything is better than nothing.  Even if it populated the user key with a generic name I would be happy.

Hi Angela,

You would need to pre-populate the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo Key with the UserName, UserInitials, Company values.
You could either, create a login script that does this, create and ADM file for the keys, include the values in your default user profile, or you could enter this information at the Office installation time, when Terminal Services redirects HKCU changes to the shadow area (though I won’t recommend this last option)

I am sure, someone with a little more time here, will be able to provide you with some script snippets to include in a login script.

Cheers,
Christoph

Hi

I need to find a way to remove the MS Office User Name popup box that pops up on first use when using office 2003.  We do not use roaming profiles so our users get this popup on first use each day.  Has anyone suppressed this popup via Group Policy?.  Has anyone created an ADM file to suppress this?

Thanks
Ang
