[THIN] Office XP and office 2007

Hi,

Just building a new XenApp 5.0 on 2003 sp2 we currently use Office XP but a few senior managers want to be using Office 2007,

Firstly can they both just be installed without going down either Application Isolation or streaming to the server via a profile.

Is streaming the better option?

If so is it k to install office XP normally and them stream the office 2007 install?

Any pointers in the best direction would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ronnie

[THIN] citrix receiver windows

for fun I'm playing with this on my PXSP2 PC - installed receiver, installed XA for hosted apps plug-in 11.1.1. I can connect to published apps okay from wither my desktop (via Receiver) and from my WI, but when I connect to a published desktop it just sits there spinning... "Please wait, connecting to your desktop"

Any pointers?

[THIN] Re: Tracking 2003 CAL's

TS Per-User CAL's are currenly done on the "honor system". In 2003, TS Per-User CAL usage is not tracked. In 2008, TS Per-User CAL usage is tracked, but not enforced (i.e., at least you can tell when you are breaking your license agreement!)

There's no real easy way to tell what is going on. Your TSCAL license serve, or alternatively, your Microsoft EA agreement, ought to tell you how many TS CAL's you own. If you control access to the TS server, or the applications that are hosted on them, via something like AD group membership, you can count the number of folks in those groups and compare that to the TS CAL count. That's about as scientific as it can get with 2003. If you don't control access to your TS systems, then theoretically all of your users are potential users of TS and thus should be covered by a TS CAL, and HR can thus tell you how many you should own.

Thanks again Carl.

To be clear, ensuring that I own enough TSCAL's for every named user is for satisfying compliance requirements and not technical requirements.  This is where the ability to track utilization would be helpful since it'd provide real data to decision makers as well as ensure that we originally sized our TSCAL's accurately.

User CALs are not enforced.

Device CALs are enforced.

Make sure all of your Terminal Servers are configured with Per User TS Licensing and there won't be a problem (run tscc.msc). However, you still have to ensure that you own a TSCAL for every named user that connects to Terminal Server.

Thanks Carl. Yes, I was asking about Per-user CAL utilization. Bummer there's no simple way to track these in 2003.

I'm continuing to look into managing the utilization of these CAL's because I suspect that we're running near capacity and want to know when the limit's been reached. However, based on this definition it appears that my 2003 terminal server farm may allow additional connections beyond the number of CAL's installed. So, if I have 500 CAL's configured on my 2003 terminal server license server, connection number 501 would technically be allowed. And perhaps that's a reason why tracking their utilization isn't so important as it won't negatively impact the business.

Can else anyone confirm this?

I simply want to avoid the opposite being true and connection number 500 is rejected due to a CAL limitation.

Thanks!

Andrew,

The application doesn't work at all in Firefox.

I can't even get to the point where the Java applet launches.  The menu within the application don't do anything in Firefox.

[THIN] Java dialog boxes

All,

Having an issue with a homegrown Java applet that keeps hanging Internet Explorer on our Citrix boxes.

Seems the Java applet is trying to popup a modal dialog box that somehow gets behind the IE window.  We got this from looking at the threads from a process dump of a hung IE instance.

The user can cause the hang pretty consistently by Alt-tabbing between seamless Citrix windows on her desktop quickly.

We're running Citrix 4.0/Windows 2003/IE6 on these servers.

Here's what we've tried so far...
  • Update the JRE configuration to disable DirectDraw support
  • Upgrade Citrix client to the latest version (version 11)
  • Disabled all IE Add-ons, except Java
  • Toggle the "Force offscreen compositing even under Terminal Server" setting in IE
  • Force the Citrix published application into windowed mode (TWIMode=off)
  • Cleaned out the published browser's cache
  • Upgraded Java on Citrix server (from 1.5.0_05 to 1.6.0_11)
  • Set the SeemlessFlags registry entry to 0x00027fb6

So far nothing has helped.

Anyone, have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Tony

[THIN] Re: Is there free XenServer training?

I’ve been very disappointed with Citrix’ online training.  If it’s free and not required for certification then Citix can do whatever they want.  But for the most part, this is not real training it’s an exercise in marketing.

Greetings,

For anyone considering giving it a go, be warned that it is approximately 6 hours long and audio-less, meaning you have one hell of a lot of reading to do if you try and complete it in a day. I booked last Friday working from home in order to undertake it and actually fell asleep for 15 mins during the latter stages!  :-)

As to its structure, I would class it as average. It’s delivery is very much in a PowerPoint presentation style, though there’s access to a table of contents which allows you to move around the various sections at will. The imitation hands-on sections are pretty noddy and the majority of the information that it imparts can most certainly be found in the manuals. Also, a large percentage of the course is based around the purchasable “extras”, so anyone looking to use it as a good introduction to the XenServer hypervisor will undoubtedly be disappointed. If it’s information on the extras that you’re after though, it does a fine job of covering them in detail.

Just my 2p worth.

Thanks to John for posting the original link to this course.

Regards,

Paul

No issues on PS 4.0/Win 2003 for my farm for over a year now. Just
install Office 2003 full 1st, then Outlook 2007 only, choosing the

[THIN] Re: Citrix UPD - direct or indirect

Direct requires print drivers on the Citrix server.

Indirect can use the UPD, which is RAW and compressed. However, if the print server is in the head office then the print job will traverse the WAN circuit multiple times.

If the print job sizes are excessive as they traverse the WAN, consider ThinPrint or WAN Optimization.

In any case, I don’t like having out of date DLLs on the system – Microsoft have obviously updated them for a reason.

Does anyone know of a permanent fix?

but does it have the basic stuff in it?  I suppose I shall have to find out.

Citrix Essentials isn't a "separate product" per se its simply XenServer with the "extra bits" that you pay for so the Seamless Storage Integration, Dynamic Provisioning etc. You still need to learn about the XenServer stuff and that's still in the course isn't it?

So, you should get the XenServer training ..and then some – you could always just stop when it gets to the non-free stuff J

thanks John but that's a separate product.  I need XenServer by itself right now which that site doesn't seem to have anything for basic XenServer right now.

Webster, I may take you up on that.....
