[THIN] Re: Citrix WAN design - the ultimate design

Hi all!

It’s been my experience that having print servers across WANs causes substantial print delays. Keeping the print servers on the same LAN as the Citrix servers works best for us.

OK. so centralizing the Print Server incurs additional WAN traversing, is this the case with Native Drivers and the Universal Driver?  Is the following correct:

1) Native Driver Printing.
( 1-Citrix Server to Print Server, 2-Print Server to Printer).
2) Universal Driver Printing. ( 1-Server to Client,  2-Client to Print Server, 3-Print Server to Printer).
3) ScrewDrivers
( 1-Citrix Server to Print Server, 2-Print Server to Printer).

The other issue with a centralised Print Server is that the Print jobs spool over a WAN.  Having a local Print Server in each branch gets around this as the Print Job spools on the local Branch Network.  The cost of 20 Print Servers is obviously more expensive than purchasing a product such as ScrewDrivers.  ScrewDrivers would hopefully compress the Print Spool data to a point where links are not saturated..

This is all theory and I could be wrong.  Hope someone can validate it for me..

Thanks
Ang

But even that is not going to work…  If it’s all centralized then standard printing will be best solution.   Using auto-created printing is not going to buy anything since the print job will be traversing the WAN three times ( 1-Server to Client,  2-Client to Print Server, 3-Print Server to Printer).

If 80% is central it doesn’t seem cost effective to do print servers or Wanscaler/Branch repeaters in each office. I think all central with ScrewDrivers is a great plan

Hi

80% of the applications are run centrally on the Citrix Servers.  All the data is also centrally managed (same network as Citrix servers).  We currently use a centralised MS Print Server but as part of the WAN upgrade I was going to install Print Servers in each office thinking it would reduce the bandwidth usage as our existing links do get saturated with Print traffic.  If I go down the ScrewDrivers path my preference would be to use a centralised Print Server otherwise I need to purchase 30 Servers for each branch office.  The endpoint devices are fat clients (Windows XP based PC's).

We are looking at upgrading the WAN to 4MB MPLS to all sites.  The links will go direct from branch to head office unless someone recommends otherwise.  Internet connection comes out of Head Office.  Im unsure if a WAN upgrade is sufficient to cater for WAN traffic or whether I also need WANScalers in each office.  I simply wanted to ensure I was not designing something that wasn't best practice...

[THIN] Link Pick: Deploying Adobe 9 for Windows

In a previous blog posting I complained about Adobe Acrobat 9 not working in IE with Windows Vista with Mandatory profiles.  Well I have since figured out after lots of aggravation that your only choice so far is to uncheck and change the setting in Adobe Acrobat Internet preferences  to turn off opening the PDF in the browser. .

In researching this issue I came across an AWESOME step by step for installing Adobe written bay Aaron Parker, that includes an MST of the recommended settings. All I can say is Aaron, you da man!

[THIN] McAfee and Citrix/TS

Anyone running McAfee products on Citrix/TS? Would like to know how you
handle updating the patch level on VirusScan 8.0/8.5i. Wonder if its OK
to let the ePO Agent enroll in a deployment procedure and pull down the
patch and let it install? This would mean the server would not be
placed manually into "install mode". Or should I not use an automated
deployment task and do patch updates by hand so I can put the server in
install mode.

The VS8.5i install guide indicates that "install mode" is not necessary
If you use ePO to deploy VS.

Would also like to know about any "best practices" and tweaks for
running VirusScan 8.0/8.5 in Citrix/TS that you use.

For reference, I will be using VS 8.5i Patch 6.1 with ePO(CMA) Agent 4.0
connected to ePO 4.0

NO most people use Thin to talk about virtualization though but you can still use virtualize@freelists.org     This site is set up by Microsoft to pull in virtualization info.  Very funny that they don't have Doug Browns blog articles as part of it,  yet they are pulling in the twitter "tweets" from the dabcc twitter feed account I helped him set up.

Hi All

A few weeks back while trolling the lists and forums, I saw a question from a member regarding a tool for deleting all profiles with exclusions. The question was from the thin lists as detailed below:

Hi

We are removing roaming profiles from our organisation as we don't really need them anymore.  We will use local profiles only on Windows 2003 systems.  I want to setup a scheduled task on each server that deletes all local profiles except Administrator, All Users and Default User.  AD Group Policy only has a setting to delete cached roaming profiles, not local profiles.

I know there are utilities such as delprof and remprof but I dont believe there is an easy way to say delete all except Administrator etc.  Has anyone achieved this or know of an easy way to do this?

Thanks
Angela

Well the good news is that I thought I'd modify REMPROF to include an EXCLUDE: option to allow an administrator to delete profiles based on age excluding specific accounts. Download it from http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/CAD_TSUtils.htm

Usage:

REMPROF [/LIST|username|/A|/D:days|/AD:days] [/EXCLUDE:usernames] [/?]

/LIST    - List all user profiles currently not in use (Default).

username - Delete user profile based on username.

/A       - Delete all user profiles that have no username association

i.e. The username has been deleted in Active Directory but

a profile still exists in form of a SID.

/D:days  - Delete all user profiles equal to or older than the number of

days specified. NB: /D: without a number is equal to /D:0.

/D:0 will remove CURRENT user profiles not in use.

/AD:days - Delete all user profiles that have no username association

and are equal to or older than the number of days specified.

NB: /AD: without a number is equal to /AD:0.

/EXCLUDE:username/s - Exclude particular users from being deleted.

Can accept multiple entries, seperated by comma.

Must be last command line argument.

                        Unassociated profiles cannot be excluded.

Do not include the Domain Name.

/?       - show this help file

REMPROF without parameters will execute the /LIST switch by default.

E.G. REMPROF /D:10 /EXCLUDE:bob,mary

This command will delete any profile equal or older than 10 days, excluding

any profile whose username is bob or mary.

I hope this is useful.

Kind Regards

I hope all is well. I'm sorry to be a bother but I saw the post below, and the tools they are looking for are QRYPUBAPP, GETPUBAPP and QRYDEPTAPP from the Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy website. http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/CAD_TSUtils.htm

I would post it myself but for some reason everytime I try and post or reply to a post, my mail gets rejected. It could be a Reverse DNS issue, but it's frustrating because I've seen so many posts that I can offer help to.

Could you post this so we can help with this issue?

[THIN] Re: Detect a published desktop via vbs?

Hi Joe,

Thanks for this.

I had tried checking explorer.exe first – but it hadn’t started when the login scripts were running so it didn’t work.

I’ll give the run key a try and let you know how I get on.

An easy way is to see if the explorer.exe shell is running.  Or better yet,  throw your helper apps in to the Run registry key and skip the script.  The Run key will execute for those who get a desktop and not for those who run a published application.

[THIN] Access gateway hardware issue?

Curious if anyone else may have run into this problem.

We ordered an Access Gateway 2010 unit for our DR site. When it arrived and one of our techs started to configure it, we noticed that the fan on the power supply appeared broken.

By broken I mean -

 - fan wouldn't spin up on power on
 - fan couldn't be spun manually - seemed completely stuck.

We called in an RMA on the unit, got a second unit and it had the exact same issue.

When we called in an RMA for the new unit, our vendor got a response from Citrix tech support that seemed to indicate that the fan on the power supply is not supposed to spin up???

Having since cracked the case open to look at the system's setup, there are 3 fans (with an airflow cover) in the main body of the system, which would help suck heat off the CPU and main-board. But the power supply only seems to have the "stuck fan" to cool it down.

At this point we're gonna stick with the "it's broken, please fix it" with our vendor and citrix support. Unless anyone here can confirm that the power supply fan on the AG 2010 units is "just there for looks" and not meant to actually . . you know . . function.

Thanks all,

Lan
