[THIN] Network World Article: Desktop Virtualization Vista's Secret Weapon

Really? I'm still not convinced that virtualizing a bloated OS and somehow sending it to the desktop is a solution.  When you think about it, the only thing the OS really does is allow applications to run and devices to be connected.  XenApp, RemoteApps, SVSApp or whatever are still in my mind the way to go and really what companies should continue to focus on.  If all of your data is in the datacenter or the "cloud" (see mesh) you only need a way to access it or the program that opens or runs it be it a browser or a doohicky. Drivers for local devices like printers can also certainly reside on the network. We have been using Citrix for 11 years at our organization with a dumbed down desktop and the ONLY reason we need local desktops is that plugins and things like Java just simply don't play nice within it.  All or our apps are remote except for the browser which needs pdfviewer, flash, java, etc etc in order to be usable.

So I would go with VDI if there was a small footprint OS that gave me a "simple" slim desktop (browser with java, pdf etc) and that is it.  Sending XP, Vista, 7 etc image over a network even just to a Citrix server is simply crazy.
