That $300 million should of been spent on doing that and not creating flaky commercials. People are still having a hard time upgrading and if you are one of those businesses like us trying to convert to Vista you are hitting a roadblock with every new program you try to install on it.
Meanwhile Microsoft moves blindly forward on a new version of an OS plagued with issues (ie: vendors still do not know how to write their software and drivers to work on it). And don't even get me started on Office. (Outlook 2007 crashes on me and has to be repaired EVERY time once a month that I get windows updates on my Vista machine, it is so maddening!)
Microsoft would be foolish to spend any money on any company until they fix the problems with their core software.
AND While VDI seems to be the likely next "big thing" it will go no place because SMART consumers will soon see that there is no inherent cost savings in it. And it is Microsoft's screwed up VECD licensing crap that is going to bury it and continue to prevent adoption. I love how the marketing, advertising and hype about how great VDI is, always fails to mention the crazy licensing scheme and associated costs. I'll rant on this until Microsoft does something about it!
If anyone gets Citrix, (and I'm not holding my breath) I think(pray) it is HP.
The fact that citrix is jointly developing the hyper-Vmotion type of product currently is of interest here though. MS/Citrix continue to update the onegreatpartner site
http://onegreatpartner.com/Home.aspx
And finally for a move like this to happen whether it is MS or HP, it would have to go to the board and maybe even a proxy vote of the shareholders wouldn't it since Citrix is a publicly held company?
Personally IF they weren going to get someone I would like to see Microsoft buy Symantec because they really need a better backup/antivirus/distribution solution for their software. They'd get Altiris, Backupexec, AV, it makes much more sense and they could really also make SVS a better product.

If this happens as Doug has predicted, then I think it will be one of the all time greatest moves on the part of Microsoft for the following reasons:
- VMware owns the existing server virtualization market in the enterprise. While Microsoft will over time encroach upon this market this is a SQL Server vs. Oracle play which will take years (like a decade) to play out. This is not fast enough to satisfy Microsoft's need to demonstrate traction and market dominance in virtualization.
- The market for virtualized desktops and applications is both young and under-penetrated. Citrix has compelling in market experience, technology leadership, and existing partner and customer traction in the business of centralizing applications (CPS/XenApps) and desktops (XenApp).
- Microsoft's old bet was to put all of its wood behind the .Net arrow in competition with J2EE (BEA, IBM, Sun, etc.). This was an important battle to fight because it made sure that MS did not lose the war for how applications were developed and deployed.
- However, virtualization, and in particular desktop/application virtualization represents a war for how all applications (not just web based ones) are deployed to end users. This is a war that Microsoft (unlike the case with Citrix/Terminal Services) cannot afford to lose.
In summary this is now a war over who controls how all applications are delivered to end users. Citrix fought and won the first battle in this war. However, Microsoft cannot afford to lose this ware to anyone. Since Citrix holds the best cards for how this war will turn out in the end, Microsoft must buy Citrix.
Doug – you are right (again).

Doug, you are truly a unique individual J
From my point of view an acquisition of Citrix by MS would a lot like that comet that arrived during the ecosystem of the dinosaur, remember that one? The results on the SBC/Virtualization ecosystem would be about the same….!!!!

Ø That Microsoft MVP you got is looking better and better Steve, Huh?
Hmmm, since I am also a CTP doesn't that mean I am losing an award?

That Microsoft MVP you got is looking better and better Steve, Huh? Actually I would HIGHLY prefer it to be HP at this point. I think it would be a smart move on their part. Who better than HP to have the ability to create the Citrix Mobile Virtual Workplace Client (remember iForum 2001 http://citrixblogger.org/2008/03/08/citrix-virtual-workplace-2001/) loved the Oh we just switched to another server part. Still a fantasy.

So, the latest one is that MS, or HP, is buying Citrix and there will be an announcement Friday. I always write these off but this time, think about this:
1) Citrix recently moved all distribution through Ingram solely
2) They are actively cost cutting
3) Stock is low right now
4) Public message is that MS and Citrix will undercut and beat VMWare *together* over the next year
5) HP and MS have cash
Hmmmm……… will I need a new career if this happens?? How about you?
