Why not use a short extension cable? When / if it wears out, replace it.

We are currently using external USB drives alongside our tape drives for back-ups, this seems to work well, but I have to swap out a drive every day, which is a lot of wear and tear on the USB connector, my question is this, can I put in two each four port USB 2.0 cards and plug all of the drives in and just leave them? Of course they would all have a different drive letter, but that is OK, if it will work.
