You could try and boot the computer with the Vista CD and do a repair. http://www.networkcomputing.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199601756 You can also get to a command prompt from there and copy things off ,if it won't repair or Boot it with a BartPE disk, copy your data off to an external drive and reformat. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
You could try replacing the crcdisk.sys file first before you reboot from winpe or bartpe also.

I tried starting my Vista machine in Safe Mode without networking as you suggested, but it would not get into Windows. Instead it seemed to hang for a little bit on crcdisk.sys, and then it rebooted itself again. What else would you suggest?
