personally, I wouldn't mix customer and employee access anywhere near each other. but i'm overly paranoid ever since they started plotting against me. :^)

A wildcard server cert would be great. Because of the way you do the SSL binding in the web server, each site just needs its own IP, and DNS should be set up accordingly.

So it looks like host headers are out, however, it appears possible if I
use 2 IP addresses that match the fQDN's of certificates on the server.
Would a wildcard cert be possible in this situation?

You'll need a different IP address for each site. You can add IP addresses
to the system in the Network configuration utility, then bind each site to a
specific address. IIS (and Apache) has HTTP host header redirection which
allows you to have multiple unique sites behind a single interface. Because
the traffic is already in the clear, the web server can forward the traffic
to the correct virtual server based on the calling address. Because SSL
communication happens before HTTP, HTTPS/SSL requires that the fully
qualified domain name match the certificate of the server, so DNS has to
point to a unique address.
