[THIN] Re: Published applications in a mixed OS environment

Good pick up Dennis. I just typed it directly into Outlook without thinking J

@echo off

IF /I "%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%"=="AMD64" (

"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE"

) ELSE (

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE"

)

Exit /B 0

Cheers,

Jeremy.

I see what "may" be a problem with that. I copied and pasted the second command structure below and once I added the proper % in the IF EXIST "%pro ...

I was able to recreate the error message.

I was able to clear it up by changing the quotes from the Fancy quotes to "Standard" quotes.

Does that make sense?

Hope it helps,

I see where I was going wrong, I thought that the programfiles environment variable would tell me which architecture I was running on – not so. There are two programfiles environment variables for X-64 and one for X-32.  So I can’t use that approach.

The processor architecture test should work, if I can get the syntax correct.  Here’s the slightly modified batch file:

@echo on

IF /I “%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%”==”AMD64” (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

) ELSE (

“%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

)

Exit /B 0

I get back:

\Microsoft was unexpected at this time.

I tried a different approach, testing for the existence of the x86 file:

@echo on

IF EXIST "programfiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

) ELSE (

“%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

)

Exit /B 0

And I get the same response: \Microsoft was unexpected at this time.

Personally, I’ve not tried mixing architectures before in the same published application, and I would suggest that it’s not a recommended practice, but you could get it to work a different way.

Change your published app to launch a .cmd file. The .cmd file would make the decision on the location of the application based on the %PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE% variable. Something like this…

@echo off

IF /I “%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%”==”x64” (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

We upgraded our farm to Presentation Manager 4.5 and added a new server running Windows 2003 Standard x64.  We want to load balance across the entire farm so we loaded our standard set of applications on the server.  We immediately ran into a problem – some of the applications were loaded into the subdirectory c:\program files (x86) rather than into c:\program files like they were on the 32 bit servers.

I thought I could just change the published application to something like this:

Command line:

  “%programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

Working Directory:

  %programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12

After testing this it starts OK on the 32 bit servers but fails on the 64 bit server with this error message (note: I named the published application Excel 64):

“Excel 64” Failed to start.

The Citrix server is unable to process your request.

Please try again.  If the problem persists,  contact your administrator.

But, if I hit OK on this message and launch the application again it starts just fine.

[THIN] Re: Published Desktop - Application Delivery

i'll second this.  I nice clean controlled desktop that is completly blank.  Then use the pnagent to drop in the applications.  It even does high color icons these days.

you can even go as far as to publish shortcuts as content which makes managing the apps even easier as you don't have to touch each application when you add a new server.

Perhaps bit of a newbie type of question, but looking to build my first farm windows 2008, Xenapp5 on Xenserver (have had experience with 4.5 etc)

Customer wants a published desktop environment which leads me to ask advice on application shortcut delivery within the published desktop.

The apps are pretty standard & I was thinking of using the PNAgent for simplicity & balancing but have also read up on using scripts to nuke start menu's & copy shortcuts to locally installed apps, and/or redirecting & using permissions on folders for read/execute etc.

[THIN] Re: Multiple Web Interface sites

you could do multiple sites if they were part of the same domain.

https://site.com/website1
https://site.com/website2

personally, I wouldn't mix customer and employee access anywhere near each other.  but i'm overly paranoid ever since they started plotting against me.  :^)

[THIN] Re: Published applications in a mixed OS environment

if you are publishing a desktop with the apps dropped in via pnagent, you can make the apps published content pointing to the shortcut to launch the app.

[THIN] Re: Multiple Web Interface sites

A wildcard server cert would be great. Because of the way you do the SSL binding in the web server, each site just needs its own IP, and DNS should be set up accordingly.

[THIN] Re: Multiple Web Interface sites

You'll need a different IP address for each site. You can add IP addresses to the system in the Network configuration utility, then bind each site to a specific address. IIS (and Apache) has HTTP host header redirection which allows you to have multiple unique sites behind a single interface. Because the traffic is already in the clear, the web server can forward the traffic to the correct virtual server based on the calling address. Because SSL communication happens before HTTP, HTTPS/SSL requires that the fully qualified domain name match the certificate of the server, so DNS has to point to a unique address.

[THIN] Re: Published applications in a mixed OS environment

I see where I was going wrong, I thought that the programfiles environment variable would tell me which architecture I was running on – not so. There are two programfiles environment variables for X-64 and one for X-32.  So I can’t use that approach.

The processor architecture test should work, if I can get the syntax correct.  Here’s the slightly modified batch file:

@echo on

IF /I “%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%”==”AMD64” (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

) ELSE (

“%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

)

Exit /B 0

I get back:

\Microsoft was unexpected at this time.

I tried a different approach, testing for the existence of the x86 file:

@echo on

IF EXIST "programfiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

) ELSE (

“%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

)

@echo off

IF /I “%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%”==”x64” (

“%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

) ELSE (

“%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE”

)

Exit /B 0

Jeremy.

[THIN] Re: Published applications in a mixed OS environment

Ah, one of the many joys of 64-bit.

PS: they play the same trick(s) with the registry. There is a 32-bit registry and a 64-bit registry (or perhaps just multiple hives like HKLM and HKLM-x86). Fun fun.

I agree with jeremy ... have the published app run a wrapper script that makes an intelligent choice about where the app binaries are located. I have played similar tricks for other reasons and it's been a good idea.

Hmm wonder if the command line is redirecting OK but the working directory isn't.  Wonder if you could leave it off.

[THIN] Re: Interesting Problem

Hi Kevin,

Sounds like maybe an issue with the Citrix CDM.sys (Client Device Mapping) driver. Have you got a memory dump? http://www.jhouseconsulting.com/articles/analysing_and_debugging_memory_dumps.html

Cheers,

Jeremy.

We had this start start happening right after we installed an update to the HP management agents.  Don't happen to have HP servers and have done that do you? Try going to msconfig and disabling all non microsoft sevices and see if the blue screen goes away at reboot.
