I agree, DFS may require some planning and coordination, but it at least does not REQUIRE consolodation.....

Thing is, though, is that one approach (DFS) is largely virtual - and
can live alongside all the existing shares and filestore in place.

Consolidating to a NAS solution is a considerable chunk of work to do,
simply to alter the way the share filesystems are presented.

Personally, I'd recommend doing some work with DFS - because it doesn't
have to invalidate what's already there, and use of it can be migrated
bits at a time, without having to interrupt what's currently in place.

Plus there's no big investment for hardware, nor huge migration of data.
Simply organising an alternate view of how you want to present a
hierarchy of your existing shared file data.
