[THIN] Re: Article: Parallels' Serguei Beloussov speaks out on free XenServer

Eh?  Software Assurance is something you pay for to get free upgrades to purchased products.  Doesn’t have anything to do with licensing quantities.

Microsoft has a different program call Software Assurance for that.

Does the SPLA and SAL thing work for a regular business who is just hosting systems for their own employees?  Or Is it strictly for true hosting providers who provide services to paying customers.

Yes it does, but the SPLA is on a SAL basis (SAL=CAL, sort of). If you have 10 users using your hosted systems, using W2K8, then you pay for 10 SALS *no matter how many servers you have*. So it is fine to have 6 file server, 2 dc, 2 dns, 20  ts, 4  hyper-v, and the W2K3/8 bit of those licences is all covered by the SAL cost.

Again, *if* you’re hosting MS apps, you *will* be paying the SAL cost in pretty much every case, which makes Hyper-V effectively free. If you’re running Linux it isn’t, clearly.

The 10 SALs, BTW, will cost ~$5/month – I have a UK price list so don’t take that as too rigid but gives a general idea.

Because its only ‘free’ when you have an SPLA – and having an SPLA subjects you to a monthly charge doesn’t it?

Cool, I didn’t realize that….

So now that Hyper-V is effectively free why would someone choose that versus XEN?

Microsoft’s SPLA – effectively a requirement if you’re hosting MS apps – has the side effect of making Hyper-V free for all practical purposes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also consider that everyone says that the Microsoft Hyper-V is free, however, you still have to buy Windows server to get it!! In your cloud example there are MANY commercial cases where a hypervisor that is actually free will continue to make economic sense for a long time!!

If you follow groups like http://groups.google.com/group/cloud-computing/, you will definitely get the idea that XenSource is the dominating hypervisor within the “Cloud”. Of course Cloud means different things to different people. Not wanting to take Serguei’s comments out of context, but when he says “This will signal the eventual end of XEN”, that will only happen when marketing rebrand it J.

BTW, don’t forget that according to the press releases Xen is “Cloud Proven”, that is my new requirement for all products! J

Interesting read regarding some reaction to the announcement of free XenServer yesterday.
