[THIN] Re: Does anyone still remap drives?

Joe - it's one thing to remove support for some alternate vendor
solution or some obscure product that no longer gets or deserves
support.

But this is specific functionality that Citrix themselves introduced and
hyped. This wasn't an OS feature, it was a *Citrix* installation time
option (initially) and then a value-add option later on. They (in
effect) created the need and the audience for it - not some
compatibility thing with another product / vendor / solution.

*That's* the difference.

I don't see how it's any different that training a user to save file to
their My Documents directory or H:\ Driver or U:\ Drive. For many
organizations, they don't like the drive remapping feature as it's
storing company data on a PC that is not backed up and has the potential
to be compromised. For thin-clients, most thin-clients have a flash
drive of which the writes are not committed to the c:\. If you allow
users to use USB thumb drives, that will be a different drive.

There are a lot of features and functions that come a go with a product.
IBM was notorious for removing features of a product in place of
another. Some people could argue that NDS support is useful but Citrix
has decided to discontinue support for Novell. Also, keep in mind the
Windows 2008 will also be the last 32-bit Server OS from Microsoft.

Take it easy Joe. Just because you aren't a fan of it doesn't mean it
isn't useful. And you can't assume that every user has a high level of
compuer literacy. Remapping removes a LOT of confusion especially when
you are running on a thin client.

I'd argue that there is - Citrix have been supporting, and perhaps
encouraging this sort of thing for years. It's a bit previous to yank it
now.

Personally, I'm ambivalent - I've used it, but I could live without it -
but all the same, Citrix introduced this functionality, and to a certain
degree, encouraged it's use.

There is no technical reason as to why Citrix should support it. I've
never been a fan of it anyways. If the users cannot follow simple
instruction then the company needs to ask why are they using a computer
or even why are they employed.

Um, why? There is NO technical reason why Citrix should not support it.
This is a stupid move.

Just curious if anyone still remaps drives on Citrix servers. My
impression is that most people have moved away from the practice. I'm
designing a new Citrix farm and wondering what the technical reasons are
not to remap drives.
