[THIN] Re: Dual ZDCs?

I'd forgotten the qfarm identifies the ZM as well.  I ran that and it confirmed just 1 ZM is in affect.  So then here is where I guess I am confused.  You stated,

By the way, it is not a requirement to run the Access Management Console or Presentation Server Console (AKA CMC) from the Data Collector. Any farm server will do, and if your zone is working correctly, the information returned will be consistent no matter which server you connect to.

and when I read that ports 2512 and 2513 are used for server to server and server to MC respectively, I took that to mean that all MCs from all servers in a given farm provide results for all servers in the farm. In our case, it is only the dedicated primary and backup ZMs that have this bird's eye view for Servers.  The MCs from any other server DO provide Pub App and Policies data for example but NOT Servers.  So you can't see what users are logged on, try to shadow or directly connect to any other server than the one you are logged on to.

Regards,

Stephanie

Each zone can only have ONE Data Collector at any one time. You have a "Primary", which will always be the server set to "Most Preferred", and you have a Backup, which is set to "Preferred". The backup will take over when the Primary fails, is taken off-line, etc. I personally always set the remainder of farm member servers to "Not Preferred" to ensure they never take part in any zone elections. Others will leave them set to "Default", just in case.

If you go to the command line on any server, type "qfarm". This will list all servers in the farm. The ones with the D after their IP Address will be the active Data Collectors for those zones. So in your case you will see two.

How is it that a Zone can have 2 operating Data Collectors?  Of everything I have read, each zone can only have one so maybe I misunderstand what is going on.  The Citrix Engineer who setup this environment advised we have data collection on 2 servers because 1 is set to Most Preferred and the other Preferred.  All other servers are left to default. We have 2 dedicated servers for each zone intended to be data collectors and by all accounts that is how they are working.  All the information from every server in the zone is available from both servers in the CMC; all other servers only provide their local information.

Can anyone clarify or explain this?

[THIN] Re: Using %username% in registry files

Why not just use a simple script like this??? No need to overcomplicate the requirement, and the way I’ve done it does not hardcode the path to the dictionary folder in the user’s profile.

@echo off

SetLocal

Set KEY=HKCU\Software\Telelogic

REG ADD "%KEY%" /V "DICTIONARY" /D "%UserProfile%\dictionary"

EndLocal

Jeremy.

Worst case you can generate the reg file from script:

@echo off
echo Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 > tmp.reg
echo [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telelogic] >> tmp.reg
echo "DICTIONARY"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\%username%\\dictionary" >> tmp.reg
regedit /s tmp.reg

We have 2003 and 2007 running on a few TSes just fine with no issues that I’ve been made aware of. Though you are right in saying you can’t have *Outlook* 2003 and 2007 running together, which may be what you mean.

Not sure I’d recommend it, as we have had confused users, but technically it works fine.

Of course now that I think about it you get the same error message if you have any Office 2007 component installed on the TS also. So make sure that you don't have any of those prior to installing 2003.  2003 and 2007 can not coexist on a TS unless you do Citrix App isolation or something like App-V.

Hi Jim,

Thank you.

With our stealth marketing we need all the help we can get.

And if anyone hasn't seen it our free Spotlight on Windows (www.quest.com/spotlight-on-windows), is well worth the registration. And it's fun to point out that it was developed in Australia :-).

Actually, we've got it all, password manager, Foglight which is one of the best enterprise monitoring products around, and of course a really good terminal services/VDI/DDI product.

Wouldn't it be nice if Citrix had integrated VDI/DDI support with a single management console, a real UPD (network printers too, NO more printing problems), user profile management that works, user environment management and application restrictions, and application publishing and shadowing for VDI/DDI.

regards,

Rick

Hello All,
Here is a great free utility to get you started learning and using Windows Powershell.  The utility is called PowerGui and it is an extensible graphical administrative console and IDE for managing systems based on Windows PowerShell.

What is really cool is that PowerGui has built a pretty large following and community and already there are many contributions of what they call PowerPacks that are prebuilt consoles for things like Active Directory, Terminal Services, Hyper-V and yes even Citrix!

So here are a few links to get you started:
You can download PowerGUI from here:
http://powergui.org/downloads

Once you download and install PowerGui you can download and add the community created PowerPacks
There is a Terminal Services PowerPack you can get from here:
http://powergui.org/entry.jspa?externalID=2071&categoryID=296
This PowerPack allows basic administration of Termial Servers (view settings, permissions, enable/disable connections), RDP sessions (message, connect to, disconnect) and RDP connections (launch, edit settings).

There is one for the Citrix Console available at this link:
http://www.powergui.org/entry!default.jspa?categoryID=296&externalID=2033
This is a pretty cool thing, you can logoff specific users, view printer, hotfixes, enable or disable apps and more. It would be excellent start to create a console for your help desk.

And one for Hyper-V here!
http://powergui.org/entry.jspa?externalID=2142&categoryID=290

There is quite a library of Powerpacks in categories such as Active Directory, Exchange, Windows Server, Reporting and more!
You can search through them here:
http://www.powergui.org/kbcategory.jspa?categoryID=21

What is really cool is once you load the power packs there is a tab that lets you see what the powershell script is doing in the background.

Enjoy!

Of course now that I think about it you get the same error message if you have any Office 2007 component installed on the TS also. So make sure that you don't have any of those prior to installing 2003.  2003 and 2007 can not coexist on a TS unless you do Citrix App isolation or something like App-V.

When you say you followed the correct method did you do it in Change user /install mode and use the MST transform file to install it for Terminal services? You will need to open each application in Change user /install mode at least once and then go back to execute mode prior to publishing the app.

I am having a problem that I cannot find a solution for, but I imagine that someone else has encountered this.  I am helping a client set up a Windows 2008 32-bit Terminal Server.  Everything is working fine, except Office 2003 Pro.  The installation ran fine using the correct method for isntalling apps on a 2008 Terminal Server.  However, when I try to run any Microsoft Office 2003 application as administrator or remote user, I get an error saying "this feature is not available."  The software comes from a Microsoft Action Pack, and I do not know if this causes the problem.  The same copy of the Office 2003 Pro software installed and runs fine on a Windows 2003 32-bit Terminal Server.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

[THIN] Download Pick: Microsoft Offline Virtual Machine Manager

Microsoft just recently released it's version 2.0 of the Offline VIrtual Machine Manager.
The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0 helps organizations maintain virtual machines that are stored offline in a Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager library. While stored, virtual machines do not receive operating system updates. The tool provides a way to keep offline virtual machines up-to-date so that bringing a virtual machine online does not introduce vulnerabilities into the organization's IT infrastructure.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool combines the Windows Workflow programming model with the Windows PowerShell™ interface to bring groups of virtual machines online just long enough for them to receive updates from either System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Windows Server Update Services. As soon as the virtual machines are up-to-date, the tool returns them to the offline state in the Virtual Machine Manager library.
