[THIN] Re: VMware ESXi now available (Free)

The get starting guide on the ESXi documentation page is a good place to start - http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vi_pages/vi_pubs_35_3i_i.html.  You might also want to check if your hardware will work with ESXi – see the HCL on that page.  The people on VMware’s forums are pretty helpful too - http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/vi/esxi3.5.

Exactly in the same boat.

We just bought a server and were planning on using the free VMWare server, but now with the ESXi being offered for free I can probably use that, right?

Can anyone recommend a good document/site on how to deploy ESXi?

Thanks,

I'm pretty new to VMware ESX, i've really only used the free server versions. I could use a little quick primer ??

To my understanding, i take a clean box, no OS installed, and boot this clean server with ESXi and setup networking paramters and such. Then from my management stations, or VI client, i installthe VMware client management package and manage this server from my workstation ? How would i go about installing new OS's to this server? As far as licensing, would it be per user or per server ? Does ESX support vlanning inside the VM host ?

Thanks everyone

[THIN] Re: VMware ESXi now available (Free)

That’s pretty much right  ESXi will install on bare metal.  At the console you’ll then set an IP address for the host.  Then open a browser from a Windows PC (required) and download the VI client from http://<ip_of_ESXi>/.  You can then use the VI client to configure the host.

ESXi will support VLANs.   With the free licensing, it is per host.  To install guest OSes – see the quick start guide - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3i_i/r35/vi3_35_25_3i_i_get_start.pdf.

The challenge will be with hardware compatibility as ESXi supports a limited hardware set.  Here’s the official list - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_systems_guide.pdf  and a whitebox list - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3.5/Whiteboxes_SATA_Controllers_for_ESX_3.5_3i.htm

[THIN] Re: VMware ESXi now available (Free)

Smart move.  They need to offer up the best free product to keep their market share up and hope people will invest in VC and additional add-on features.  Not limiting the core hypervisor is a way to get everyone involved.  I might be doing a few ESXi installs real soon now that it's free.  I was recommending 2 copies of VI3 Foundation Pack but the people weren't to hot to spending close to $3000.  Now they can do it free and still get the core benefits.  Can't beat it.

[THIN] Remote a client PC connected via CAG SSL VPN

I am asking for ANY input...

I can not figure out, of all the VPN's I have used in the past, we have never had an issue remoting a client PC connected via that VPN to the corporate network, until implementing a Citrix Access Gateway Standard.

Is there ANY way to be able to remote the client machines when connected via the Citrix Secure Access Client?
The preference is to not have to buy yet another piece of software to handle this function.

[THIN] Re: Home Folder not mapping

Event ID 2021 is commonly logged when there is accumulation of work items in the server service.  This is normally associated with disk throughput issues, but can be related to other things like virus scanning or other processes that prevent the system from keeping up with the requests. Refer to Technet article KB317249. It’s a bit weird that it worked from the Published Desktop though…maybe it was sharing an existing connection, where the Published App session was trying to create a new one???

Cheers,

Jeremy.

all of the articles center around permission or missing shares, but it maps from a published desktop, which is strange.

The articles on the home share server's issues are all increase maxconnections, page pool, etc. So it seems to think that it's overworked even though it's almost idling.

personally, I would bite the bullet and bounce it first before getting too nuts.  Or at least restart the server service, then bounce it if that fails.

[THIN] Re: Home Folder not mapping

lovely error. is it happening to all users or just one?

permissions?

Try this....back out their username on the home folder on the account setup and replace it with %username% and hit ok.  It should tell you that the folder already exists and offer to make that user the owner of the folder.  Click yes to that offer and it shoud slam the permissions back in place for that folder.  See of they still have a problem.
